Who It’s For:
Wine professionals and consumers who already have a broad foundation of wine knowledge — including wine labeling laws, appellation systems, major wine-producing regions and grape types — and are experienced in tasting technique, and want to take their learning to the next level.
What You’ll Learn:
This course provides a thorough understanding of the principal wines and spirits of the world and their commercial importance in the world’s market.
Specifically it covers:
- The details of wine production (location, viticulture, vinification, maturation and bottling, labeling regulations).
- The key factors affecting style, quality and price in the major wine and spirit regions of the world.
- Detailed information and advice on storage and service of wines and spirits for customers and staff.
- How to evaluate quality, style and price in the glass.
- Six wines will be tasted in each class session.
Session One: February 23rd & 24th
Session Two: March 9th & March 10th
Session Three: March 23rd & 24th
Exam: April 2nd
37.5 hours of class time and a two-and-one-half-hour exam.
The exam has two units: a practical tasting paper of two blinded wines; and a written exam composed of 50 multiple-choice questions and four short-answer questions.
What You’ll Achieve:
The ability to describe the characteristics of the principal wines and spirits of the world and explain the key factors influencing their style, quality and value.
The skills to advise management, answer customer queries authoritatively, and to make informed selections of wines and spirits in a variety of situations.
Candidates who successfully complete both units of the exam will receive the WSET® Level 3 Award in Wines and Spirits.
The WSET® Level 3 Award in Wines & Spirits is a prerequisite for the WSET® Level 4 (Diploma) course.
At least 21 years of age AND
A passing grade in the WSET® Level 2 Intermediate Course in Wines & Spirits; OR
Successful completion of the Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) course of the Society of Wine Educators; OR
Successful completion of a WSET-sanctioned entrance exam.
Registration is required by February 18th, 2019.
