Did you know there are over 4,000 dairy farms and over 620,000 milk cows in New York State? We are the largest producer in the COUNTRY of yogurt, sour cream, and cottage cheese, and the third largest in milk production- so how do you know if you’re eating or drinking milk products from NY State? And why choose New York State?

The answer is easier than you think! Each dairy item has a unique plant code telling you where the milk in that product came from, and when you’re looking for NY? Pick 36! The numerical code is located on the packaging (not the UPC barcode) and is followed by a hyphen with other numbers that specify the actual plant. For example, the code on our butter is 36-5056. We automatically know it’s from NY! If you want to take it one step further,  you can visit https://whereismymilkfrom.com/ and enter the entire code to see the exact location- in the case of our butter it’s Batavia.

Most dairy farms in NY are small, family-owned operations so you are truly supporting local farmers and the 26,000 jobs the dairy industry creates in our state. At NY Kitchen our mission is to support and celebrate NY agriculture and buying local milk a no-brainer!
